Hi! First off, introductions are in order: What is your name and what is your role at Fair Retail?

My name is Inês and I'm Fair Retail's fashion designer.

What is the story behind Fair Retail? When did it start and what was the inspiration behind it?

Fair Retail started in 2016 with the launch of our first collection AW16 Nude. At that time I was focused in creating a sustainable brand with fashion appeal.

I felt that the existing offer within sustainable fashion brands was quite alike style-wise. So I reckoned this as a gap in the national market and decided to create my own label, by designing sustainable products without compromising style.

With that in mind, our first collection was a small range of every day products and our claim was to create timeless pieces with durable quality and emotional value.

What are the values that drive the brand?

Sustainability and environmental issues have been a hot topic to me for a long time, so when I decided to create this brand I obviously wanted to add this concern to our core values.

Our sustainability approach is to create durable garments with the best local resources and manufacturing work. Fair Retail collections are made from Portuguese factory overproduction. We choose suppliers that operate under sustainable practices such as reducing water consumption and optimising electricity usage. The ultimate goal is to deliver our costumer a final product with high quality standards, a garment that is made to last.

This is really important to me, I’m very confident that the only way to tackle fast fashion is by changing people's expectations towards a fashion product lifetime. If brands are able to achieve that, consumers will then not feel the urge to buy as many clothes. Instead, they will invest on clothing that is durable and that will contribute to a decrease in fashion consumption.

What are the distinctive features of the brand’s products?

In all our clothes our clients will find simple lines and shapes, easy fitting, minimal details and the most amazing textures!

How does the creative process for the products carry out?

Because we produce our collections from textil waste, our creations start at our suppliers. Before each season we visit several factories and browse our fabrics. Then we make the fabric selection according to material origin, fabric performance, resistance and finally we narrow that selection down to a color scheme so that each collection has visual consistency. This is were the fun begins! Surprisingly the creative part of the process is the briefest, however it is definitely the most fun.

Personally, what is your day like working at Fair Retail?

My average day starts on my laptop, during the mornings I am in contact with our partners and suppliers. Lately, I’ve included to this morning list replying to the increasing curious minds who contact me with queries on our sustainability strategy. Which I quite like! The rest of the day is spent between production and designing.

I know one shouldn’t pick favorites but… what is your personal favorite piece from your current collection?

Ok… I’m not proud of this but I do have a favourite. This season I became in love with our Vicky dress. Its a checked print blazer dress, its versatile, comfy, playful, feminine, the color are to die for… Its a full package deal. The ultimate must have!

How has The Feeting Room played into the brand's growth?

We have worked with The Feeting Room from our very beginning. This has always played an important role to us, because it gave us the chance to be present in store at both the heart of Lisbon and Oporto. On top of that, being part of a curated store such as TFR has put us aside exclusive brands and open windows to clients that value our work and products.

Fair Retail is available at The Feeting Room stores and online.
